The Experience

Española Island is a crown jewel of the Galápagos. As one of the oldest islands in the chain, it has evolved into a unique sanctuary for endemic species. This is the only place in the world where the Waved Albatross nests, performing their intricate courtship dances on the high volcanic cliffs. Alongside these giants, you will encounter the vibrant “Christmas Iguanas”—famed for their striking red and green colors—and blue-footed boobies nesting just steps from the trail. From the dramatic blowholes at Punta Suarez to the turquoise snorkeling waters of Gardner Islet, Española offers an unmatched wildlife immersion.

Your Adventure Itinerary

07:20 AM — Boarding at San Cristóbal

Meet our crew at the “Acuario” pier in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. We set sail on a 2-hour open-ocean navigation towards the remote southern tip of the archipelago.

The Wildlife Trail (80% Hike)

Disembark at Punta Suarez or Punta Cevallos for a guided walk. This is where the magic happens: walk among hundreds of marine iguanas, watch the albatrosses take flight from the cliffs, and spot Nazca boobies and Galapagos hawks.

Marine Exploration (20% Snorkeling)

After the hike, we head to Gardner Islet or Manzanillo Beach. Dive into the water to swim with playful sea lions, sea turtles, and schools of tropical fish in one of the most scenic bays in Galápagos.

04:00 PM — Return to Port

After a full day of discovery, we navigate back to San Cristóbal Island, arriving at the main pier just in time for the evening sunset.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to see the Waved Albatross?
The albatrosses are seasonal. You can observe them from April to December. Between January and March, they migrate away from the islands to feed on the open ocean and are not visible on Española.
How long is the boat ride to Española?
Since Española is a remote island, the navigation takes approximately 2 hours each way from San Cristóbal. If you are sensitive to motion sickness, we recommend taking medication 30 minutes before departure.
What makes the marine iguanas here different?
Española is home to the most colorful marine iguanas in the archipelago. Known as “Christmas Iguanas,” they develop bright red and turquoise hues during the mating season to attract partners.
Is it a wet or dry landing?
The landing at Española is a wet landing. This means the boat gets as close as possible to the beach, and you will step into knee-deep water to reach the shore. Sandals or water shoes are helpful.
Can I take this tour if I am staying on Santa Cruz Island?
No. This tour departs exclusively from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristóbal Island. We recommend staying at least 2 nights on San Cristóbal to join this expedition.
