The Los Tuneles Experience

Formed by ancient lava flows that cooled upon hitting the ocean, Los Tuneles (Cabo Rosa) is a breathtaking network of underwater caves, lava arches, and peaceful lagoons stretching over 800 meters. The natural breakwater creates a tranquil haven for marine life. Here, you will have the unique opportunity to snorkel in extremely calm waters, spotting delicate seahorses in the mangroves, huge sea turtles, and whitetip reef sharks resting safely in the caves below. Above the surface, you’ll be greeted by blue-footed boobies and Galapagos penguins.

Your Adventure Itinerary

Departure — Setting Sail from Puerto Villamil

Starting from the dock in Isabela Island, we embark on a 1-hour navigation. Enjoy the coastal views as we head toward this remote volcanic sanctuary.

Stop 1 — Roca Unión (Birdwatching)

Our first highlight is Roca Unión, a dramatic rock formation rising from the open ocean. This spot is excellent for observing pelicans, Nazca boobies, and blue-footed boobies perched on the cliffs.

Stop 2 — Snorkeling at “El Finado” (80% of Tour)

We jump into the peaceful waters of El Finado. Guided by an expert, you’ll snorkel through the clear shallows looking for seahorses hidden in the roots, manta rays gliding by, and the famous “tintoreras” (whitetip sharks) resting in the lava crevices.

Stop 3 — Lava Tunnels Trail & Lunch (20% of Tour)

We take a short, highly scenic walk over the collapsed lava bridges. You’ll get up close with marine iguanas and resting blue-footed boobies. Finally, enjoy a delicious box lunch on the boat before we navigate back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to stay in Isabela Island to take this tour?
Yes. Because the tours depart early from Puerto Villamil, and ferries from Santa Cruz have specific schedules, it is mandatory to spend at least one night on Isabela Island prior to the tour.
Are the whitetip reef sharks dangerous?
Not at all. The “tintoreras” (whitetip reef sharks) found in Los Tuneles are incredibly docile. They are nocturnal hunters, meaning during the day you will usually see them resting peacefully in the shallow caves.
Is the water rough inside the tunnels?
No, that is the magic of Los Tuneles! The giant lava arches act as a natural barrier against the ocean waves, creating calm, pool-like conditions inside the labyrinth. It’s a very relaxing snorkeling experience.
Will I definitely see seahorses?
While wildlife is always unpredictable in its natural habitat, Los Tuneles is famously one of the most reliable places in the entire Galapagos archipelago to spot seahorses clinging to the mangrove roots.
Is snorkeling equipment provided?
Yes! We provide masks, snorkels, fins, and short wetsuits to keep you comfortable in the water so you can focus entirely on the marine life.
